It is the beating of his hideous heart!. After the murder of the old man, the narrator thinks he can hear the old mans heart beating beneath the floorboards where his body is stashed. The narrator is dealing with guilt from the murder, and he does not even realize it. His heart is beating out of his chest, and his anxiety from the murder is catching up with him. His insanity has him so focused on the old dead man that he does not even consider the possibility that it could be his own heartbeat. The guilt has his emotions so troubled that it is having physica l effects upon his own heart. In Eight American Authors: A Review of Research and Criticism Jay B. Hubbell states, the undercurrent of meaning is so strangely marked by conflicts of a very evident sort between man and man, and between man and nature (32). Unable to handle the overwhelming heartbeat, the narrator confesses to the death of the old man. His external conflict of the narrator versus the old man leads to the internal conflict of man versus natural guilt. His guilt, along with his insanity, led to him admitting to the crime and ultimately getting in trouble. Madness is often one of the biggest themes in Poes writings, much like it is in this one. This story, from the main begging all the way to the very end, conveys messages of falling into madness. The narrator is unstable in the beginning no doubt, but it only goes worse as the story goes on. His internal insanity leads to him physically acting upon it. In the opening line of the story, the narrator tells the reader, True! Nervous very, very dreadfully nervous I had been and am! But why will you say that I am mad? (Poe 3). This opening line lets the reader know something is off with the narrator. Before telling the reader any information, he immediately proclaims that he is not calm, or as one might say, hes fearful of everything. A sane person would not start off immediately claiming to be sane and asking why others say he is not. In the next few lines, the narrator says, Above all was the sense of hearing acute. I heard all things in the heaven and in the earth. I heard many thing s in hell. How, then, am I mad? (Poe 3). In Edgar Allan Poe, Harold Bloom says, His denial of madness only intensifies the effect of his bizarre claim The opening words imply that we have provoked the speaker by asserting what he denies: far from being insane (52). Bloom, along with many others, see this opening paragraph as an immediate red flag of the narrators madness. Sadly, the madness only gets worse, and the narrator falls into it, eventually acting upon it. As the story goes on, readers see the narrator fall deeper into his insanity by physically killing an older man. While this is most definitely insane, it is not the worst part. The worst part would be the narrator obsession with the old mans eye. Poe states in the story, He had the eye of a vulture a pale blue eye, with a film over it. Whenever it fell upon me, my blood ran cold; I made up my mind to take the life of the old man, and thus rid myself of the eye forever (Poe 3). The narrator mentions this eye several ti mes throughout the story, revealing his obsession with it. This eye leads to the narrators self-destruction. The emotional effects of insanity, more so the obsession with the eye, leads to the physical effect of killing the old, innocent man. Like most of Poes works, one of the biggest focuses in The Tell-Tale Heart is death. However, it is more than just the death of the old man, although that it is a huge part of it. This story also focuses on the death of the narrators freedom and insanity. The old man dies at the hands of the narrator. Poe states, In an instant I dragged him to the floor, and pulled the heavy bed over him. I then smiled gaily, to find the deed so far done (3). The narrator did not commit a gruesome murder, he simply smothered the man. But his motives behind this link back to his insanity. In The Tales of Poe (Modern Critical Interpretations), Harold Bloom states, The narrator is mad, or at least abnormal according to his own account He is doubly mad when he imagines he hears the pounding of the dead mans heart (141). The narrators motives for killing are stated in the short story itself, but they are not real reasons for murder. This murder is purely due to the narrators insanity. Perhaps the narra tor became obsessed with the thought of killing someone, or maybe he truly did not know what he was about to do. Either way, he completed the murder. He even went on to try and cover up the murder. Within the story, he says, I then took up three planks from the flooring of the chamber and deposited all between the scantlings. I then replaced the boards so cleverly, so cunningly, that no human eye could have detected anything wrong (Poe 6). Not only was he obsessed with the murder, but he also became obsessed with the hiding of it. When speaking of the murder and the coverup, it is almost as if the narrator is proud of his doings. In Symbolisme from Poe to Mallarme; the Growth of a Myth when discussing Poe and his works, Joseph Chiara says the first is that what one may call vertical symbolism, that is to say the apprehension of the invisible world through the visible (97). Poe uses this specifically in The Tell-Tale Heart. He shows the invisible insanity through the visible murde r. Not only does the narrator become physically obsessed with the murder by carrying it out, but he also becomes emotionally obsessed by being proud of it. Astronauts will have to endure long-term isolation, monotony, limited mobility and close living quarters amongst each other for months and potentially years at a time. If a student has written down all of chapter 6, he or she is suppose too be familiar with the test after taken down notes all week. Therefore, writing notes is another quality of a student being successful while he or she is in college. What qualities in a student cause him or her to be successful while in college? Many colleges are wondering the qualities. It takes one from experience to answer such a question. After surviving the spring 2012 semester, my following qualities were: taking a CCSS course to figure out what would I be successful at studying in, feeling out the professors so we both can cooperate like teacher-student, and writing down everything the teacher wrote on the board. I think that one of the main reasons to work and amass abundance of wealth is so our children are able to have a better and easier life and won’t have to go through any struggles concerning money while they’re growing up. Even though this is contradicted in Haslett’s essay, when he says that working to provide wealth for our children is one but not the main factor for people to work hard, I still believe that having the opportunity to leave our wealth to someone we love and or care about, once we die is the main reason as to why we desire to be wealthy. I think our actual system where we can leave our children our wealth and give them the opportunity to run the family business and not be deprived of it when we die works just fine. As Haslett’s says in his essay, it might be true that wealth is unevenly distributed in our society and how a few of the population accounts for most of the wealth and most of the population has literally not much to nothing. But I disagree with his opinion, I don’t think this is mainly due to how many of the millionaires in this country have become millionaires by means of inheriting their wealth rather than by working for it. I believe the government and not inheritance is more to blame because of the poverty level and uneven distribution of wealth. Although it is true that child of wealthy parents have an unfair advantage over poor children, they still have to work at keeping their wealth and sometimes becoming wealthier, if not they would run out of money fairly easy because of their lifestyle. I believe the government should take part in leveling the field between wealthy and poor children not by abolishing inheritance but by providing opportunities for poor chi ldren to become more educated and being able to amass wealth just as wealthy children do. As for Haslett’s explanation as to how inheritance doesn’t go hand in hand in accordance with capitalism and how it seems to contradict the ideals of capitalism, well I disagree with his opinion. In a system based on capitalism individuals should be given the same opportunities to succeed, that’s true, but I don’t think that by taking someone’s wealth away would solve the problem or make it fair despite his explanation and opinions. Although it is true that children or people in general who inherent wealth have an advantage over those who were born poor or with no wealth, I believe the government could help in that matter. Instead of using funds in wars, pointless researches and projects, and rebuilding countries who definitely have more natural resources which make them wealthier than us, the government should invest more in our society education and economy to help lower the poverty level in our society. By giving everyone a chance to obtain a degree, the government would be kind of evening the odds when it comes to children who inherited wealth against those who were born poor or didn’t inherit their fortune from their parents. By allowing everyone to get an education and obtain their degree, whether they succeed and become wealthy is not a matter or having inherited a fortune anymore, but of having the desire and the will to become a successful and or wealthy individual. So in conclusion, I don’t think that by abolishing inheritance we will be able to evenly distribute the wealth in our country. I believe is more a matter of actually providing individuals a chance to be educated so that they have more chances of succeeding and be wealthy than it is about inheriting wealth. Individuals who are born wealthy may have an advantage over those who didn’t inherited any wealth at all, but taking their wealth wouldn’t be fair just as well as Haslett argues that it isn’t fair for those who are born with no wealth or didn’t inherited any wealth.
